What are your Easter traditions?

As Easter quickly approaches, I realize I have yet to buy my egg coloring kit or at the very least some vinegar and food coloring. I have a six year old, so these things are still critical to our celebrations. Oh, and eggs to be hard-boiled. Strangely enough, I really like to eat hard-boiled eggs, but don’t make them very much with the exception of Easter.

It’s going to be a beautiful weekend, thankfully since we just had snow last week. But that has melted and we’ll be able to hide eggs outside for the kids. One other thing my family always did on Easter was tohave a kite-flying contest. We used to gather in Tipton, Missouri, by the old 8-ball water tower, (if you’ve traveled mid-Missouri on hwy 50, you know where I mean), and all of us, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends and neighbors would get together and have a huge kite flying contest. Well, we called it a contest, but other than bragging rights, there were never any prizes. Some would bring expensive, fancy, exotic contraptions, but I always opted for the 99 cent special at the Dollar Store, and usually mine flew the highest and stayed in the air the longest. Along with the mocking and trashtalking, the being together and doing something outside on Easter was one of my favorite family memories.

So now that I have my own family, I like to try to get them out. I’m in Nova Scotia now, and not Missouri, so the nicer weather is about a month behind where I’m from. Often we still have rain or snow. But I’m excited to see the forecast and see that it should be a beautiful, albeit a bit nippy, day.

Coloring eggs, an Easter egg hunt, the Easter bunny visiting the kids, a big Easter dinner, candy and kites… that’s what Easter is like at our house. What’s it like at yours? What traditions do you follow or fun things do you do?

Also, today is the last day in my Easter Egg Blog Hop! Traci has hidden a letter in this blog post, and so did several of my previous posts. If you find them all in order, they spell a line from my book Speak of the Devil. Tweet it with @sromkey #speakofthedevil and you’re entered to win a signed copy of my book plus a swag pack. For the details and the list of blogs taking part, see my post on it here: http://www.shawnaromkey.com/?p=706
